Newark Memorial Gas Leak Repairs Begin Today

Repairs to gas pipeline at Newark Memorial to take up to 48 hours, officials say.

Construction is still under way and gas services at are scheduled to be turned off as repairs are made to a gas pipeline.

Gas services will be shut down at Newark Memorial starting at 10 a.m. Wednesday so that workers with Bonetti Construction can expose a pipe near the campus’ office where , said Newark Unified Superintendent of Schools Dave Marken.

Marken said the Bonetti Construction officials estimate that the repairs will take anywhere between 24-48 hours.

The Sunnyvale-based company has been directed to replace an elbow joint with a valve so that gas services can be shut down to certain buildings.

The most recent gas leak was first detected near the school’s office on the afternoon of Dec. 8 and it's the third repair being made to the campus' gas pipeline.

Repairs were made nearly three weeks ago – one of which was a valve located near Newark Memorial’s and the other being a pipe located 4 feet underground near the high school’s pool wall. That damaged pipe was caused by

Damage to the campus’ gas line, which PG&E officials have said is not a major pipeline, was first reported was made, Marken has said.

Prior to the Dec. 8 leak, the initial cost of the repairs totaled approximately $19,000, Marken said.

Tests will be conducted before district officials ask PG&E to restore gas services again, he added.
