Stadler to be Sworn In as School Board Member on Dec. 4

Stadler will join the five-member Newark Unified School Board of Education.

Gary Stadler has been a parent volunteer at local schools for nearly a decade but in recent years, he’s wanted to contribute to Newark Unified School District more.

Beginning Dec. 4, Stadler will have his chance to do so as the newest member of the Newark Unified School Board of Education.

Stadler is primed for one of three open seats on the five-member board after only three individuals applied to run for three open seats. Stadler will replace incumbent Janice Schaefer who decided not to file for re-election.

Going for a seat on the board seemed like the next step to take, said Stadler, who added that he hopes to bring new viewpoints onto the board.

As a volunteer who has worked at all levels of schools in the district, Stadler said he is knowledgeable about what goes on at the school sites and an idea of what is needed.

“I’ve been in the trenches. I’ve seen what goes on and I have a perspective they don’t have,” Stadler said. “I’m there every day, and I see the good, the bad and the ugly.”

While Stadler commends the district for having a knowledgeable and “fantastic” group of teachers, staff and administrators, the incoming board member noted that there is room for growth in various departments.

The top issue Stadler said he would like to see addressed is the equality of programs and facilities at each school site and the stability of leaders – both at school sites and at the district office.

“I’d like to see our schools united,” said Stadler, who said each campus differs. “They should be more similar. I’d like to see all our schools together on the same page.

A restoration of programs is another priority Stadler believes the district should address.

In recent years, school sites saw a dwindling of various programs due to narrowing budgets.

The results included the elimination of elective programs, including art, choir, band, and sports,  at Newark Junior High School, during the 2011-12 school year. Electives have since been restored at the junior high.

“Some kids come to school for drama, some kids come for choir, some kids come for sports,” Stadler said. “We have to be there for every one of those students.”

Stadler also sees a need for more collaboration between the school district and the City of Newark.

“I want to see us come together,” Stadler said. “We need to be all in this together for the benefit of the city, for the benefit of the kids.”

Stadler first ran for a seat on the board in 2010, but was 747 votes shy of landing a seat.

Stadler, along with incumbents Ray Rodriguez and Jan Crocker, will be sworn in at the school board’s Dec. 4 meeting, which begins at 7 p.m. at the Newark Unified district office, 5715 Musick Ave.

Actually, Jan Crocker, along with Gary and Ray, will be sworn in at the meeting -- I have another two years on my current term. Congratulations to all! Gary, it's great that you are joining the board. Your insight, passion and experience from working at our school sites will add yet another dimension to our discussions.

Thanks, Nancy! My mistake. We'll correct, and I'll check our previous report on this issue, too.

I wonder how long it will take for the fumes that come up through the ground on Musick Street to render Stadler an ineffective board member just like all the rest? They all start out altruistic with a bunch of ideas to improve the schools, but alas, between the fumes and the PublicEducationSpeak, they soon fall in line and do what the unions tell them to do.

Jacob, have a little faith! Gary, like many parents that are "perpetual volunteers" really do know the "skeletons in the closet" so to speak. He spends most of his time out in the public/student view, I don't think you have any worries about "fumes" getting to him!

To create any change is an effort of communication, listening well and building consensus to move forward. A dose of good humor and a fatherly approach will carry Gary to successful service. Best wishes to Gary.

Looking forward to your swearing in. All the best Gary

I have a lot of faith in Gary. We all need to remember that the progress will be slower than we would like because the budget cutbacks are so severe, Gary, thank you for stepping up to the plate to serve Newarks' children.

Oh this opens up NMHS like a can of worms. There have been suspicions of this for years regardingRead More Rich Swift at the annual Crab Feed, Margaret Jean at the 4th of July Fireworks sales, Stacey Kelly snackshack, and how about Edna, shes always at the gate taking the money. Im glad someone with balls is getting this out in the public. Yes, the money needs to be counted and deposited by a committee and not the individual in charge as has been the case for many years. While were on the subject of NMHS, what about the rumors that Rich Swift threw away letters from colleges for prospective athletes. Rumor has it there were many letters found in his drawers after his death.

Good response Teddy, and truth.

The more likely explanation is that the vast majority of Newark Police officers lack the requisiteRead More aptitude & agility necessary to fill shopping bags with groceries & didn't want to do anything to further embarrass themselves while under the scrutiny of the bewildered shoppers like James.

This probably sounds heartless, but it sounds like this house should be condemned before a tragedyRead More occurs. I doubt if any organization can bring it up to code because of the cost. It's really sad to see this happening to a working person in this country.

I'm not sure if your mom will qualify but there are lines of credit out there that she can get as aRead More home owner. It will require her to have the income to pay back small portions at a time. Thanks James!, You know it's amazing when somebody puts their own personal time to learn andRead More understand something and then you share it... I would have been more then glad to explained myself in more detail face-to-face because I may learn something myself but like a marriage you don't get on here and start posting every little detail about you and your wife and I'm not going to get on here and start posting every little detail about my past employer`s. So to whoever flagged me you could have simply posted a disagreement and I'm open-minded and can admit when I make a mistake...I would've simply deleted my post if you could've proved it wrong.
