Council Meeting Full of Leadership Changes

Mayor Elect Al Nagy, Councilmember Luis Freitas and Councilwoman Elect Sucy Collazo will be sworn into their respective seats at Thursday's council meeting.

The choice of Newark residents will become official Thursday night when David Smith resigns as mayor and takes his seat.

A declaration of the results from the Nov. 8 election will kick off the council meeting, which will begin at 7:30 p.m. at , 37101 Newark Blvd.

With 46 percent of Newark votes, Nagy won the seat over Councilwoman Ana Apodaca and Ray Rodriguez, Newark Unified Board of Education vice president.

Also at the meeting, longtime resident and business owner received the highest number of votes out of five city council candidates, garnering 33 percent of the votes cast. Collazo takes the seat of Councilman Alberto Huezo, who announced he would not seek a second term in July

got 32 percent of the votes cast, securing the council seat he has held since 1995.

All three will take the Oath of Office at the council meeting, and Mayor David Smith is expected to make special remarks before the reorganization of the council takes place.

Also at the council meeting, five public hearings will be held to consider six-month reviews of five separate conditional use permits for existing wireless telecommunication facilities (Clearwire) at the following locations:

  • Bemis Flexible Packaging, 6590 Central Ave.
  • , 39900 Balentine Dr.
  • 37800 Timber St.
  • , 5977 Mowry Ave.
  • C, 34905 Newark Blvd.

The council will also vote on whether to approve the service rates for waste collection and recycling services for 2012 with no increase over 2011, allowing staff to resolve the Augmentation Fund by paying Waste Management of Alameda County at $300,908.

The Augmentation Fund was created by the City of Newark after the closure of Durham Road Landfill closed in order to reduce the impact of significant rate increases of disposal costs.
