You Can Help Catch Criminals

The Newark Police Department releases information about Bay Area Crime Stoppers.

From the Newark Police Department

Bay Area Crime Stoppers is a community-based organization dedicated to solving and preventing serious crime by promoting community involvement in the apprehension of criminals.

How it Works:

There is always someone who has information that can help solve crime. These people can call Crime Stoppers anonymously and provide a tip that will help investigators identify those responsible.
In any investigation, police and other law enforcement agencies encounter individuals who will not directly provide information. The three key reasons are:

  • Fear of reprisal,
  • An attitude of apathy,
  • Reluctance to get involved.

About the Program:

Crime Stoppers breaks through these barriers by giving people the opportunity to provide information:

  • Without directly speaking to police,
  • Without revealing the caller's identity,
  • Without having to testify in court,
  • With an opportunity to earn a reward if the information leads to an arrest and charge.
  • Bay Area Crime Stoppers (BACS) is one of 1,200 Crime Stoppers programs in 20 countries. Crime Stoppers programs have enjoyed great success, boasting an average conviction rate of 95% on cases solved by a tip to the program.
  • Features: The BACS program is a nonprofit organization offering cash rewards of up to $2,000 to anyone furnishing anonymous information that leads to the arrest and charging of fugitives and criminals committing serious felony crimes. Information is received through a special BACS tips hotline manned by a professional call center 24/7. Each caller is assigned a code number for the purpose of assuring anonymity.
  • Benefits: BACS is a very cost effective way for law enforcement to gather information on crimes. One phone call or text message could lead to the solving of many crimes in any given area.
  • Funding: The program is supported by tax-deductible donations from businesses, corporations, individuals and service organizations.
