Police Seek Four Men in NewPark Mall Jewelry Store Robbery

Shots were fired but no injuries were reported.

Newark police are searching for four men after display cases were smashed and shots were fired in a jewelry store robbery that occured inside of Thursday afternoon.

Commander Tom Milner said police were called to the shopping center around 12:15 p.m. after the police department received a call of gunshots fired.

Police have determined that , located across from Sheikh, was robbed by four men, Milner said.

The men, one of whom had what was possibly a Mac-10 pistol, then began smashing the display cases and grabbing jewelry, Milner said.

"At that point there were some shots fired inside the store," he said.

All four suspects were armed with semi-automatic handguns, Milner added. Milner said it is not clear why the robbers fired shots, as there was apparently no resistance from employees. It is not clear which gun or guns were fired during the robbery.

"Thankfully, we're happy to report that there were no injures," Milner said.

The suspects then ran through JC Penney's to reach the parking lot where they entered and fled inside two suspect vehicles that were last seen heading  onto northbound Interstate 880, Milner added.

The first vehicle is described as a white 2008 Mercedes E-Class and the second suspect vehicle is said to be a black Acura or Lexus with a license plate number believed to be 6LWZ43.

All four suspects are described to be black males between the ages of 20 and 28. One suspect was described as 160 pounds with a possible tattoo on his right forearm, Milner said. All of the suspects were described to be thin and dressed in black hoodies.

Police could not say whether the store was specifically targeted. The investigation is ongoing and Milner said Newark police will be analyzing whether the incident has similarities to any recent jewelry store robberies within the Tri-Cities and the entire southern Alameda County region.

Zena Jewellers is closed to customers, but as of 1:30 p.m., all other businesses inside of the mall remained open. Police exited the area around 4 p.m.

Employees with the jewelery store were not available for comment, but an  employee at Motherhood Maternity, located two stores down, said she had heard a number of loud crashes when the robbery was happening.

NewPark Mall General Manager Kelly Gardner said mall staff has been "working in full cooperation with the local authorities as they investigate the situation,"

Gardner added, "Because this is an active police investigation we are unable to comment further at this time."

Any person with any information concerning these incidents can contact the Newark Police Department's non-emergency line at 510-578-4237 or can call the Silent Witness Hotline at 510-578-4000, extension 500.

Power goes out all the time in my area off Mayhews and Willow. I have filed numerous complaintsRead More with PG&E. It was off for two days a month ago. All underground lines and goes out at least 2 times a month. Have to reset my clocks, wifi etc. very irritating.

There's been some construction going on at the north end of Lake Blvd, just before the freewayRead More overpass leading into Ardenwood Park. That's been going on for about the last 7-8 business days.

Today PG&E told me that about 3,000 customers (homes and businesses) in Newark and Fremont wereRead More without power from 7:57 p.m. to about 11 p.m. (I think ours went out a few minutes before that and I'm sure ours came on before 9 p.m. I suppose maybe some of those 3000 folks were out longer as they brought neighborhoods back up gradually, but my guess is that some bureaucrat guessed at the beginning that the outage "should" last 3 hours, and that became historical "fact.") due to a "device failure." (Now that's informative. My guess remains that wind was involved.) They called and left a message on my Comcast voice mail to let me know the power was out and that it should be back on by 11 - but my phones require power so I didn't get the message until this morning. I just called PG&E to change the number they call with such notifications to my cell, but they were able to clarify nothing else. Anyway, in case you were wondering, that is what PG&E now says happened.
He will probably be scared at first but he comes for food

I remember as a teacher buying my own supplies. Looking back I don't regret buying anything andRead More realize that each person's teaching style is different. The things I might buy for my classroom would be totally different than you. Running a classroom is a lot like running a business, there are expenses and you just have to deal with that.

It's definitely a great photo! We didn't anticipate it to stretch like that. We'll change itRead More eventually, but your friend should have enough time to check it out, John.

James, I completely understand and agree. The image is stretched beyond the dimensions it was meantRead More to be viewed, but it was a pleasant surprise to see the photo at the top of the page! I hope it stays up for at least another day so my friend can see it. Thanks for your reply.

Difficult to navigate, jumpy, hard to read, distracting. I'd also like to see something other thanRead More the Lake featured for once representing Newark. We have some beautiful stained glass work on the side of City Hall - why not show that for a change?

One story I tried to read had an ad covering 1/4 of it, and there was no way to make it go away.

Don't like it at all. "Change" isn't always for the better.
