Parent Project Classes Begin Next Month
A 13-week program that addresses truancy, suicide, gangs and violence starts March 6.
Another session of a program that helps parents address issues with their troubled teens is soon starting up again in the Tri-Cities.
Parent Project, a 13-week series that focuses on truancy, suicide, gangs and violence – along with other issues adolescents face – will begin next month in Fremont.
Parent Project is a national program that developed the classes to be taught at schools, police departments, mental health agencies, churches and other public and non-profit agencies. Teachers go through a week-long training program.

The classes are offered in English and Spanish, according to the City of Fremont website.
In a , Parent Project instructor Luz Ponce said the goal is to teach parents “different strategies so they can accomplish dealing with hard behavior.”

“We teach different skills on how to cope with those behaviors and how they can achieve what they want,” Ponce said.
Fremont police issued a press release regarding the program in which they outlined the benefits of the program, which are as follows:
- Never argue again with your child.
- Prevent (or stop) children from using alcohol, drugs and tobacco.
- Improve school attendance and performance.
- Recognize and prevent gang involvement.
- Find solutions to violence, chronic running away and suicide.
- Improve family relationships and create peace in the home.
The next session begins March 6 and the classes are held from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the Family Resource Center’s Pacific Room, 39155 Liberty St., Fremont. There is a one-time $35 materials fee paid at registration, with a weekly fee based on income.
