Man Accused Of Shooting Federal Agent To Enter Plea

Dennis Bagwell, 61, of Piedmont is charged with the attempted murder of his former student's husband.

A Piedmont man facing in connection to a shooting that injured a federal officer who lives in Newark is scheduled to return to court Wednesday morning.

Dennis Bagwell, 61, is due back at the Fremont Hall of Justice at 9 a.m. to enter a plea to charges of attempted murder and assault with a firearm.

Authorities have not released a direct motive, but Bagwell may have had a “near obsession” with the victim's wife, Iyrna Smith, who was a student of his at the Bay Area Optical Schools in Union City.

Police said Bagwell and the victim, Robert Suplik, had some kind of confrontation in front of Suplik's home on the 7700 block of Mayhews Landing, around 5:50 a.m. on Feb. 7.

At the time of the incident, authorities did not immediately release the medical condition of Suplik, a U.S. Customs and Border protection agent, but court documents revealed he was shot multiple times. As of Monday, the Alameda County District Attorney's Office still had no information on his condition.

Bagwell is being held on no bail at Santa Rita Jail.
