Fire Crews Extinguish Lumber Yard Fire

The fire sparked around 8:40 p.m. Monday

A one-alarm fire was contained by Alameda County Fire crews at a lumber yard south of Central Avenue Monday night.

Fire crews responded to the 6899 Smith Avenue just after 8:40 p.m. Monday to find a trailer that collects sawdust at the Five Star Lumber Co. on fire, said Battalion Chief Ronnie Oatis.

"What we have here is a trailer that collects sawdust. When it cuts wood, the sawdust goes in," Oatis explained. "It caught on fire. We don't know how."

The fire was contained by 10 p.m., which was around the time that the trailer was pulled out so it could smolder in a safer area, Oatis said.

Fire crews were careful not to add too much water to the trailer to prevent it from buckling, according to Oatis.

No one employed with the lumber yard was at the scene when the fire began and no injuries were reported.

Four engines, one truck and two battalion chiefs from Alameda County Fire responded to the scene. It is unknown whether other fires have occurred at the lumberyard before Monday's incident.

Five Star Lumber specializes in manufacturing pallets and skids and was founded in 1981, according to numerous business listings.

The lumberyard is located off of Cherry Street between Central and Mowry avenues.
