Crime Log: DUI Hit-and-Run Suspect Arrested at Sober-Living Home; Armed Robbery of Pot Vendor

Man busted breaking into cars at church, and more from Oct. 2 to 9.

The following are significant crime and incidents reported in Newark between Oct. 2 to  9 as released by the Newark Police Department. 

Wednesday, Oct. 9

  • Police seek woman with embezzlement warrant. More here.
  • SAFE Task Force asking for help finding sex offender. Details.
Tuesday, Oct. 8
  • Pot and texts lead to arrest of probationer. A 36-year-old Newark man, on felony probation for drug offenses, was reportedly found with an ounce of marijuana in his car during a 12:30 p.m. traffic stop and probation search. Officers also found on his cell phone numerous text messages indicating he was selling marijuana. A follow-up probation search was made at his home, although complicated when the suspect refused to give up the key. After numerous attempts to contact his girlfriend, the complex manager and neighbors, police forced open the front door to complete the search. The man was eventually arrested and booked at Fremont Jail.
Monday, Oct. 7
  • Reports of early morning gunfire. Callers from Christine Avenue and Thomas and Broadway avenues reported hearing gun shots at about 1:30 a.m. Area checks were completed by multiple officers, but no evidence of a shooting was found.
  • Woman arrested after stabbing man at Fremont restaurant.Details.
Sunday, Oct. 6
  • Late-night DUI crash on Cedar. Officers responding to a hit-and-run collision on the 36100 block of Cedar Boulevard at 11:48 p.m. found a vehicle disabled in the roadway with its airbags deployed. The female passenger was located on a nearby lawn in extreme pain. And the driver, a 28-year-old male, was located and arrested for suspected felony driving under the influence, without his ignition-interlock device and hit-and-run. The female was transported to a local hospital and treated for injuries. 
  • Man arrested for looting cars at St. Edward's. A local transient, 39, was arrested after a brief foot chase and struggle at 8:38 p.m. after being caught breaking into five cars at St. Edward Catholic Church. Items stolen from the vehicles were found on the suspect, and he was arrested for burglary, resisting arrest, possession of burglary tools and stolen property. Police were tipped by citizens who reported auto burglaries in-progress. 
Saturday, Oct. 5
  • Newark man arrested for DUI at sober-living facility. A Newark man, 39, was arrested for felony DUI at a sober-living facility on St. Christopher Avenue after allegedly causing a hit-and-run accident on Thornton Avenue near Newark Square at 3:52 p.m. The struck victim  suffered a broken finger in the accident, and multiple witnesses identified the suspect as the driver who fled the scene. The man was arrested for felony DUI, a parole violation and felony hit-and-run.
  • Two smash-and-grabs. An auto burglary with the vehicle's window broken was logged at 1:18 p.m. at NewPark Mall's Sears parking lot. A second break-in was reported at 2:09 p.m., again with the window smashed, of a vehicle parked at Bombay Garden Restaurant on Mowry Avenue. That burglary occurred between noon and 2 p.m. with a laptop stolen.
  • Armed robbery reported by marijuana vendor. An individual, who claimed to be the vendor of a "collective" selling multiple pounds of marijuana, reported being held up at gunpoint at 5 p.m. in the Newpark Mall McDonald's parking lot. The potential buyer was possibly from Oakland, and fled in a 1990s white Cadillac in an unknown direction on I-880. The victim was cited on a traffic warrant.
Friday, Oct. 4
  • Fremont police seek help identifying suspected gold-chain bandits who knocked down elderly woman at Walmart. Photos and story here.
  • Daytime break-in on Marguerite. Cash and jewelry were reported stolen during a home burglary that occurred between 9 a.m. and 6:30 p.m. on Marguerite Drive.
  • Fremont police arrest Union City man on suspicion of molesting high school student. Story here.
Thursday, Oct. 3
  • This right went wrong. As a big-rig was making a right turn at 8:13 a.m. onto Willow Road, a car attempted to pass the truck on the right-hand side. There were no injuries, but the vehicle was totaled.
Wednesday, Oct. 2
  • Teen in cast, wearing ankle bracelet ... lies to cops. Officers contacted a juvenile in a suspicious vehicle, who then lied to police about his name so as not to alert them to his ankle monitor. Moreover, the young man was in a cast after a recent apprehension from a K-9 officer while fleeing a residential burglary. The juvenile was arrested for providing a false name and released.
  • Double bust at Motel 6. A Los Angeles woman, 27, was arrested for cocaine possession at 5:18 p.m. as officers conducted a probation search at Motel 6. Her friend in the room, a 25-year-old Oakland female, was a parolee-at-large with a felony warrant and was arrested, as well.
