Need to Know: Join A Band, Contribute To City’s General Plan

This week, have the kids join a band or the Cub Scouts or participate in updating the city's General Plan.

Here are five things you need to know in and around Newark this week.

1. Music is coming back to the elementary and junior high schools in Newark with an independent band program that will be starting soon. opens on Tuesday, Nov. 15 and runs through until Thursday, Nov. 17. Bring your children between 3 p.m. and 4 p.m. to the Newark Junior High School’s former band room to enroll.

2. Superintendent of Schools Dave Marken will deliver the State of the District address during the Newark Unified Board of Education’s regular staff meeting, which is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 15 at the , 5715 Musick Ave.Also at the meeting, the district will recognize the Measure G Bond committee, who led a campaign in support of the district-sponsored school bond measure that was passed by voters on Nov. 8.

3. Parents of boys in grades 1-5 or between ages 7 and 10 are invited to attend the . The meeting will be held between 7 p.m. and 8:30 p.m. at , 35660 Cedar Blvd. To learn more about Club Scout Pack 441, click here.

4. Take part in giving your input on an update to the city’s general plan this week by attending a community meeting on the Newark General Plan Enhancement Project that will be held from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Nov. 19 at the George M. Silliman Recreation Complex.

5. Give back to the youth this weekend by stopping by the from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the gas station located at 35425 Newark Blvd. (the corner of Newark Boulevard and Cedar Boulevard). There’s no cost to get your car washed, but donations are accepted.
