Need to Know: School Board Meets, Senior Workshops, Forum With An Assemblymember

School board to hold a special meeting, seniors to learn about public transportation and a forum on jobs.

Here are five things you need to know in and around Newark through July 3.

  1. The Newark Unified School Board of Education is expected to hold a special board meeting on Tuesday night, according to Liz Warren, executive assistant in the Superintendent’s Office. Closed session will begin at 5:30 p.m. and public session starts at 7:30 p.m. An agenda for the meeting is expected to be posted today.
  2.  Seniors can learn more about how to take public transportation to be held this week. The workshop will help seniors learn more about taking buses and BART and will be held from 9 a.m. to noon on Tuesday and Thursday at the Ralph and Mary Ruggieri Senior Center, 33997 Alvarado Niles Rd., Union City.
  3. Join the fun at the Silliman Aquatic Center during Open Recreation Swim Hours at the . On Wednesday, the recreation team with the City of Newark will be hosting events as part of its weekly “Whacky Wednesdays," which begins at 1 p.m.
  4. The Senior Citizen Standing Advisory Committee will be holding its Wednesday. Seniors are invited to attend and help the City of Newark identify issues pertinent to the senior citizens of Newark. The meeting will begin at 8:45 a.m. at the .
  5. Assemblyman Bob Weickowski will be launching the . As a result, he has invited the community to take part in a forum on how to revive the state’s economy. The event is co-sponsored by the Fremont, Newark and Union City Chambers of Commerce and will be held from 10 a.m. to noon at Solyndra, 47488 Kato Rd., Fremont.
