5 Things You Need to Know: May 30-June 5

Celebrate Memorial Day, tap your toe at the (potentially) last ever junior high band concert and applaud award recipients.

  1. To remember and honor men and women who serve our nation,  Chapel of the Chimes, 32992 Mission Blvd., Hayward, will host a Memorial Day celebration starting at 1:30 p.m. today. 
  2. The Newark Junior High School Advanced Band will perform its 2011 Spring Concert on Tuesday, May 31, at the . The event begins at 7 p.m. and doors open at 6:40 p.m. It is free and open to the public. (Don't miss it—this is your last chance this year, and maybe ever, to hear the junior high musicians play. Junior high art and music programs are casualties of the district's budget shortfall for next year.)
  3. Students and teachers from the Newark Unified School District and Ohlone Community College will be honored at the third annual Avanzando Awards Night. Avanzando is a non-profit organization that focuses on Latino youth and families. The event is from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, June 2, at the , 6430 Thornton Avenue.
  4. If you see a bunch of teenagers dressed up in their best attire, it's because the prom will be held on Saturday, June 4, for juniors and seniors.
  5. Ohlone Community College will host its Citizen of the Year Luncheon to honor groups, organizations and individuals who have made significant contributions to the community. The event will be held from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, June 4 at the .
