Sugar High Dessert Dispensary Open at NewPark Mall

Tri-City residents who are on the hunt for a sweet treat don’t have to travel very far for a gourmet dessert.

Sugar High Dessert Dispensary is now open for business in Newark and has served a variety of savory confections at its location side of NewPark Mall since early December.

From jumbo cupcakes and cheesecakes to chocolate “fundue” and ice cream, Sugar High is no ordinary dessert spot. What is “fundue,” you ask? It’s a platter of fruits and other sweets with a cup of chocolate to dip into.

Sugar High is the product of a family that knows food.

Co-owner Jacquelyne Parrish grew up in restaurants. Her father and co-owner, Phil Woodman, once owned a restaurant in Fremont’s Niles district. Parrish also worked at Dino’s Family Restaurant while growing up in Fremont and is the owner of Truckin’ Sweet – a mobile food truck that serves up ice cream, floats and desserts.

Woodman also owns Pizza Pimps and Food Truck Mafia – a coalition of food trucks that travel together throughout the Bay Area to serve gourmet-style food to foodies.

 Parrish said she has always had a passion for food and people and that establishing a dessert shop in a permanent location gave her the opportunity to serve sweets year-round.

“I like the fast-pace environment and interaction,” Parrish said. “And every day is different.”

And every day is different indeed.

While Sugar High does offer classic flavors such as strawberry cupcakes and S’mores sundaes, the flavors of the cupcakes, pies and ice cream can change with the seasons. During the holidays, pumpkin cobbler and peppermint mocha cupcakes populated the menu.

Costs of the treats start as low as $3. For customers looking to buy in bulk, Parrish recommends that they pre-order because all treats are made fresh the morning of the day they are sold.
