Newark Factory To Close, 124 Jobs To Be Lost

Bemis announces plans to close Newark factory, according to the Oakland Tribune.

A company known for making packaging products announced Wedesday it plans to close its Newark factory, according to media reports.

An article in the Oakland Tribune states that Bemis, located at 7025 Central Ave., will soon close, a move that will cost 124 workers their jobs.

Bemis spokesperson Kristine Pavletich told Oakland Tribune the closure was necessary in order for the company to "improve efficiencies and reduce operating costs."

But the story also states that East Bay labor officials learned that oversea competitors of Bemis had an impact on the decision.

The work force board is said to have begun working on finding new jobs for the displaced employees, according to the report.
