Suspect Shot in Police Standoff Remains in Hospital

The suspect "has a long road to recovery," police said.

A Newark man who was critically wounded after being shot during a police standoff last Friday evening remains hospitalized, police said Thursday.

Though his current condition was not immediately known Thursday morning, Cmdr. Mike Carroll of the Newark Police Department told Patch that the suspect “has a long road to recovery.”

Due to the suspect’s condition, he has not been arrested and no charges have been filed against him, Carroll said. His name is not yet being released.

According to police, the suspect was wounded after he opened fire on officers on Friday, May 17.

Officers had responded to the 5500 block of McDonald Avenue at about 5:40 p.m. after receiving a call about a depressed relative who had firearms in his possession and was making suicidal threats.

While negotiating with the man by phone, officers heard several shots being fired inside the home. Police surrounded the home and continued to negotiate with the suspect. After about 45 minutes, the suspect threatened to shoot the officers and hung up the phone on the negotiators.

Additional officers responded to McDonald Avenue home in an armored vehicle. That’s when an armed man came out of the house and began firing shots at the officers in the armored vehicle, according to police.

Officers shot back and hit the suspect at least once, according to initial reports. The man retreated back inside the home.

Officers located the wounded suspect and transported him to a hospital for treatment, where he remained Thursday morning, according to police.
