Coroner Identifies Newark Man Killed in Vallejo

By Bay City News

The Solano County coroner's office has identified the man who was killed when he was hit by a large earthmover at a Mare Island construction site Friday as 49-year-old Jose Manuel Cruz of Newark.

Cruz died of multiple injuries, a coroner's office spokeswoman said. Vallejo police Lt. Herman Robinson said Cruz and another employee of KDW Construction LLC were surveying the future site of three homes at Flagship and Club drives around 12:55 p.m.

A Caterpillar scraper grading the site was moving east toward the 2-man crew, Robinson said. The driver made a U-turn and did not see Cruz who was holding a pole used in the survey. When the driver looked back and saw Cruz on the ground, he got out of the scraper and called for medical aid, Robinson said. Cruz was pronounced dead at the scene.

The California Division of Occupational Safety and Health is investigating the death.
