By Bay City News

A man was seriously injured after he crashed into a tree and split his car in half in Newark early this morning, a Newark police sergeant said.

The man crashed into the tree on Newark Boulevard near Fair Avenue around 12:45, Newark police Sgt. Manuel DeSerpa said. Emergency crews arrived to find a sedan split in half.

The driver, who was the only person in the car, had to be extricated from the car. He was taken to Eden Medical Center in Castro Valley with major head injuries.

DeSerpa said the man was found going in and out of consciousness. The crash is under investigation however "speed most certainly is a factor," DeSerpa said. Police are also looking into the possibility that alcohol was a factor. No other cars were involved in the crash.
