Under the command of a battalion chief, three firefighters operate a Quint, a machine that has the features of a fire engine and a ladder truck. Firefighters say they have been called to assist with emergencies outside of Newark including the San Bruno pipeline explosion in September 2010.

The department is located at the Newark Civic Center.</p> <p>In an online message, Police Chief James Leal says his officers are committed to enhancing the quality of life in Newark through law enforcement.</p> <p>Fifty officers and nineteen non-sworn personnel members serve the city of Newark. </p> <p>According to the department's website, police dispatch officers handled more than 74,000 emergency and non-emergency phone calls in 2008.</p> <p>The department has K-9 units to assist with drug enforcement and a Special Weapons and Tactics Team to respond to complex and critical incidents. The Animal Control Division falls under the supervision of the Newark Police Department. Newark citizens support the department through the Graffiti Abatement  and Volunteer Cadet programs.</p>
