Elementary Teacher Named District Teacher of Year

Lincoln Elementary Teacher Connie Piserchio was recognized as Newark's 2012 Teacher of the Year and Kennedy Elementary School Office Clerk Debbie Platko was named Classified Employee of the Year for Newark Unified.

Newark Unified School District has named its 2012 Teacher of the Year and Classified Employee of the Year. The pair – along with 22 other Newark Unified employees – were recognized at Tuesday’s school Board of Education meeting. Lincoln Elementary School Teacher Connie Piserchio was recognized as the district’s top educator and Kennedy Elementary School Office Clerk Debbie Platko was named top classified employee of the year. Superintendent of Schools Dave Marken described the 24 employees as an all-star team. “All of the people who work for our organization should be honored,” Marken said. “We’re here to celebrate all the hard work of all the people in this organization.” Marken said he is thankful of all of employees of the district. Ex School Official Charged in Child Porn Case Pleads Innocent

Newark Unified's former chief business official Steven Shields was first arrested on suspicion of possession of child porn in November. He is due back in court Wednesday.

A former Newark school official arrested more than six months ago has pleaded not guilty to charges of child pornography possession, according to an official with the Solano County District Attorney's Office. Steven Shields, who was once Newark Unified School District's chief business official, was originally arrested on Nov. 3 at his Clayton home on suspicion of possessing child pornography. He is scheduled for a "readiness conference" Wednesday to determine whether the case can move forward for a preliminary examination, said a district attorney's office employee who declined to give her name. Upon his November arrest, Walnut Creek police said a forensic investigation of Shield’s personal computer and storage devices would be conducted. …

$400 Worth of Materials Stolen From School Classroom

Newark police said a projector and camera system were taken from Schilling Elementary School.

A classroom at Schilling Elementary School was found burglarized Friday morning, police said. Police are investigating the burglary of the classroom, which resulted in the loss of approximately $400 worth of materials. According to Newark police, a projector and camera system was stolen. Police were not able to determine how the suspects entered the room. No suspect description was available. The Super-Plex, Twist of Fate, and sudden Spears all were maneuvers dished out at the Newark Memorial High School Event Center by wrestling legends who came to town to support the high school on Saturday. Police Increase School Patrols in Response to Graffiti

Threatening graffiti found at Newark Memorial High School in early April indicated a mass killing on May 14.

Despite threatening graffiti that coated Newark Memorial High School buildings indicating a mass killing on May 14, school will be in session on Monday. The threat first surfaced in April when staff found the phrases “I'M GONNA KILL EVERYONE HERE 5-14-12," followed by "OFWGKTA" painted bright yellow on the outside of a school building. Still, no arrests have been made in the case and the investigation is ongoing, police said. “All viable leads have been followed up, but unfortunately they did not lead to a suspect, said Cmdr. Sixth Grader Receives Regional Science Awards

A student at Challenger School is one of eight students from Alameda County who competed in the California State Science Fair.

A Newark sixth grader has been recognized by the state and county for her analysis of applied mechanics and structures in her science experiment called Tension on Knee Joint and Quadriceps Muscle. Challenger School student Mahima S. Chilakanti is one of eight students who were recognized by the Alameda County Office of Education for her participation in the county Science and Engineering Fair, according to a press release issued by the Alameda County Office of Education. NJHS Teachers Named Reading Award Recipients

The Alameda County Reading Association will honor two Newark Junior High School teachers at its annual Awards and Installation dinner.

Two Newark Junior High School teachers are the recipients of awards through the Alameda County Reading Association. English teacher Jason Tarn will be receiving the David H. Russell Award for Excellence in Reading Instruction and para professional Maria Huffer has been awarded the Walter J. McHugh Award for assistance in Reading Instruction. Five Teens Arrested After Fight at Newark Memorial

Police said officers responded because a large crowd began getting involved in the fight.

Five minors were arrested Wednesday morning after police officers responded to Newark Memorial High School to a report of a fight, police said. Acting Sgt. David Lee said police officers arrived to the high school campus mid-morning and found a number of female teenagers fighting with a larger crowd getting involved. All Newark police units on duty responded to the high school to address the growing crowd, said Lee, who added that the crowd had begun surrounding the officers. The Argus reported that Superintendent Dave Marken said the fight stemmed from a conflict the girls, who were between the ages of 15 and 16, had over a boy and that all five have been suspended. Osana Futi Remembered by School Official as `Gregarious and Outgoing'

Bay City News — Osana Futi was a Newark Memorial High School football star who was going to graduate in June and planned to attend a community college in the fall, a school official said Monday. Futi, 18, "was very gregarious and outgoing," said Dave Marken, the superintendent of the Newark Unified School District. Marken said Futi, who played halfback and linebacker, and the team's quarterback were in his office on Thursday to talk about their plans. Osana Futi Remembered as Loving Son, Devoted Friend, Talented Athlete

Family and friends remember the life of an 18-year-old Newark student who was fatally stabbed late Saturday night.

The Newark Memorial High School senior’s life was cut short by violence Saturday night after he succumbed to injuries early Sunday that he sustained during a fight that turned into a reported stabbing outside of a house party in Fremont’s Blacow District on Saturday.
