Final Farewell for Slain Newark Student

A memorial service was held Friday for Newark Memorial High School senior Osana Futi, 18, who died after a stabbing in Fremont in late April.

One thing was made clear as hundreds mourned together for slain Newark student Osana Futi Friday, it was clear he was known for many characteristics. Caring, happy, dedicated, loving, physical, a workaholic and spirited. Those were just some of the one-word descriptions Newark Memorial High School students and staff had about the 18-year-old who died three weeks ago from a violent stabbing in Fremont. An 18-year-old Fremont man has been charged with Futi’s murder. “He’s indescribable,” one student said. Remembrances, Photos and Videos from Osana Futi's Memorial Service

A memorial service for a slain Newark Memorial High School senior was held Friday night.

Hundreds gathered Friday night to remember the life of Newark Memorial High School senior Osana Futi in prayer, song and words of hope. During the nearly two-hour service for Futi, relatives and friends recalled their memories of the 18-year-old man who came from Samoa at the age of 10 and grew up in Newark to become a star football player who was known for a big smile and uplifting spirit. Memorial services are scheduled for Saturday at 1 p.m.

By the Gentry family: Betty Charlotte Gentry, a longtime resident of Fremont, passed away at her home on Sunday, May 6, 2012 at the age of 87.   Born Aug. 17, 1924 in San Francisco to her parents, Gustav L. Asp and Vivian L. Asp. A lover of dance from the time she was born until her last breath, she dedicated her life to bringing the joy of dance to young and old…teaching her last class at the age of 86 for the cities of Fremont and Newark.   All students who read this obituary notice know that Mrs. Gentry, as her students called her, loved each and everyone of you. Dance Teacher Betty Gentry Dead at 87

Longtime Newark ballet and tap instructor Betty Gentry passed on Sunday, family members said.

The woman who brought tap and ballet to Newark for decades has died, family members confirmed Tuesday. Fremont resident and longtime Newark dance instructor Betty Gentry died Sunday. She was 87. Gentry, born and raised in San Francisco, ran her own studio for 15 years. Afterward, she moved to Fremont, where she planned to focus on raising her daughter. Then in December 1963, Gentry started teaching dance in Newark and throughout her 48 years as a Newark dance instructor, her classes expanded to include ballet, tap, hip-hop and adult dance classes. In June 2011, Gentry’s final dance revue was held and the Newark City Council commended her upon her retirement. “You’ve just created such a legacy here in Newark. You’ve touched so many lives,” …

Funeral Services Set for Osana Futi

A viewing is scheduled for Thursday and a memorial service is planned for Friday for Osana Futi, a Newark student who was stabbed and killed in late April.

Funeral services for a slain Newark student have been finalized for this week. The community is invited to both the viewing and memorial service for Newark Memorial High School senior Osana Futi, who died April 29 after succumbing to injuries he sustained from a stabbing the night before. He was 18. A viewing will be held Thursday from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Memorial Chapel, 3723 Peralta Blvd. in Fremont. A memorial service will be held Friday starting at 6 p.m. at the Newark Memorial High School Event Center, 39375 Cedar Blvd. in Newark. Those close to the Futi family are continuing to hold fundraisers to help the Futi family pay for memorial services. Relatives intend to transport Futi’s body to Samoa for a burial ceremony in his homeland …
