Rick Eymer made a "bush league" grammatical error that should have been caught. SeeRead More paragraph 2: "Since signing a professional contract with the Detroit Tigers in 1981, Melvin HAS RODE a roller coaster of success and failure." Even a sports reporter should know better than this.....

Who can ever forget the great athlete Rich Swift was at Mission San Jose High back in the lateRead More 1960's, graduating in 1970. He was an outstanding football player and one of the best high school wrestlers in the country. I never saw him lose a match. The only thing that kept him from competing in college (Cal Poly SLO) was an unfortunate knee injury. Thanks for the memories, Coach Swift. So many of us were in awe of you back when you competed at MSJ High School, and I understand you were just as awesome and inspirational as a coach!
David March 11, 2013 at 12:22 pm
I played for Michaletos at JFK way back in the 70s'. Coach Swift was 23 years old and making theRead More transition from former athlete to coaching. It was obvious even then that he was a "lifer". I will never forget how much fun it was when he let us borrow his Austin Healey! The fear of putting a scratch on Rich Swift's car was HUGE. Thank you to the NM students who videotaped the service. I could not make it down from Folsom but the live stream gave me a chance to be there. Thank you. God bless you Rich.
Patty Christap March 10, 2013 at 03:04 pm
What can you say about like Swift. He made men out of boys, women out of girls. He acted asRead More coordinator of construction projects. Because of his leadership, NMHS has a Tech Center, Indoor Commons, television studio, instructional play fields and his passion The Events Center. He loved kids, sports and academics. He never stopped working. Rich was a model for us all. It will be hard to sit in the Events Center with all of the many memories he gave us all. Thank you Rich. I miss you; I thank you; I love you. Sorry Rob - I didn't know Flushing was part of NYC. The rest of the points are accurate and supportRead More the argument. But I probably deserve a jab for being ignorant on the details of NYC.
Nick February 22, 2013 at 05:15 pm
Agreed, SF did not need a ball park to make itself into a major league town. SF was able to supportRead More 2 major franchises for more than 50 years. SF is a major metropolis and the Warriors want to cash in on it. They didn't even give Oakland a chance. They know it's where people want to be. Much rather see them throw an arena closer to downtown than the pier....something like the Madison Square Garden of the West.

The Newark and Memorial High School sports programs merged and the first NM Cougars Football teamRead More was fielded in Fall, 1981. The two high schools merged in the Fall of 1982. The paragraph should read "Continuing at NM High School in 1981, when the sports programs merged" - Daniel DelGreco, Original Cougar

Mr. Swift, thank you for all the ways you have given of yourself to the students, not just as aRead More teacher and coach. A person can get paid for doing a job, but there is no amount of money that can be paid to have someone care so much about others. You're in our hearts, truly forever.
Bob Jones February 11, 2013 at 05:08 pm
Rich: You are a true champion in the highest regard. It was most obvious duriing your senior yearRead More as a Mission High School wrestler when you forged ahead to become the California State Champion in your weight class. You have continued with that tenacity and leadership form that time forward. The bar you have demonstrated and established as a participant, teacher, coach, counselor, mentor, colleague, leader, innovator, organizer and friend is of the highest integrity and value. You have touched and influenced with love and compassion thousands of lives. Your presence and accomplishments will be a legend that will continue to influence lives for generations to come. You have Blessed all of us. Thank you! God Bless You! Your friend, Bob Jones

Nope, they're shutting down Mt. Davis and a couple sections in the top corner of the originalRead More structure. They will be tarping those off and reducing "capacity" to 53,000 in an effort to sell out games without the help of 2 for 1 deals, nor re-purchasing any leftovers to guarantee a sellout. Agreed, with all the violence, TV is the way to go.

Palomar, Well said comment! There should have been an early pass-interference call on the 49ers asRead More well. If the refs had been making calls in the early game, players would have had to play by the rules throughout. Instead they let there be numerous late whistles and late hits (where one guy had the runner stopped with a tackle and then other guys were allowed to hit him--very physically dangerous and with game-changing possibilities of injuries and fumbles) and also over aggressive shoving/fighting after the point (mostly started by the Ravens). I thought the officiating was poor and changed the nature of the game. Wasn't this almost the fewest penalty calls that these teams have EVER had? (I'd like to hear those statistics.) Did these teams change that much from their previous season play that they now weren't doing penalties? I doubt it.
Palomar Parkman February 5, 2013 at 12:39 pm
The game was very entertaining for fans of both teams. That is why you watch. The 49ers played likeRead More a young team. Flashes of brilliance and moments of stupidity. The non-calls by the refs changed the ebb and flow. Their performance was pathetic and that is supposed to be the 'best' ref crew the NFL has to offer. Bad calls and non-calls never even out. I expect to see the game played by the rules. I am not sure what the ultimate outcome would have been if it was properly officiated but it most definitely would not have been the same game I watched. What a disgraceful display by the NFL on their biggest stage.
P February 4, 2013 at 08:45 pm
It's is VERY hard to get into the Super Bowl in the first place. So the idea that the 49ers areRead More going to definitely get back there next year is wishful thinking at this point. It's unlikely, but I hope they do!
W. E. SPICER February 3, 2013 at 03:57 pm
Rough place, lots of fights, check with the Fremont Police Department on all the calls they getRead More there. The Patch will not print this just like the first one I put in.
Tim February 1, 2013 at 11:48 pm
The analysis isn't showing "fans" at all, but rather who people would like to see win theRead More Superbowl between the two teams that are playing in it. It's hard to root for a Baltimore team that features a murderer as a starting linebacker. No wonder more people want to see SF win. I am a New York Giants fan and I'd like to see SF win but it doesn't mean I'm a "fan".
Mike LeVien February 1, 2013 at 11:37 pm
And the Raiders? Look in the toilet bowl, of life.
