Week in Review: 18-Year-Old Stabbed, Volunteers and Educators Awarded

Two violent crimes topped this week’s news in Newark. An 18-year-old Newark man was critically injured in a gang-related stabbing that occurred in the Newark Square Shopping Center, police said. Authorities are investigating whether the incident is linked to a drive-by, gang-related shooting that occurred five hours later on the 6300 block of Mirabeau Drive. Police added that the location of the shooting is the same area of a 2011 shooting that injured a 17-year-old boy Newark Vice Mayor Ana Apodaca is one of eight candidates contending to fill a vacant seat on the Alameda County Board of Supervisors as a result of former supervisor Nadia Lockyer resignation that came after months of scandals, according to the Oakland Tribune. State Schools Chief Calls For Whooping Cough Vaccinations

California law requires that students entering grade 7 be vaccinated.

By the California Department of Education SACRAMENTO — State Superintendent of Public Instruction Tom Torlakson today urged parents of students entering the seventh grade to vaccinate their children to protect them against whooping cough as required by California law.  “I call on all parents to act as soon as possible and ensure their children receive this important vaccination,” Torlakson said. “Taking a few minutes now will help protect your child’s health, and help them get off to a smooth start in the next school year.” “In 2010, 9,000 Californians were diagnosed with pertussis and 10 infants died from the disease. For years propagandists, including RFK, Jr., promulgated misinformation from a bogus immunization study conducted bya a physician in the pay of medical litigation attorneys. Supposedly immunizations led to autism - but it turns out that he fabricated his data. Three South Bay Table Tennis Stars Headed to Olympics

Three of the four table tennis players headed to London with the U.S. Olympic team this summer train at the India Community Center in Milpitas. For coach Rajul Sheth, 41, the table tennis center’s director, it’s all part of the plan. This year they compete; In 2016, they win medals against players from China, who now dominate the winners’ podium. By qualifying more than one player to this year’s Olympics, “We exceeded our goal,” Sheth said. “We’re in the pipeline.” Milpitas players Lily Zhang, 15, of Palo Alto; Ariel Hsing, 16, of San Jose; and Timothy Wang, 20, of Houston, all are packing their bags to cross the pond. Solar Eclipse 2012: Where to Watch it in the Bay Area

A solar eclipse will impress over Bay Area skies Sunday, May 20. Check out this list of where in the Bay you can catch the best views and learn from experts at the same time!

We know. On the weekends, you may be find yourself away from home, but somewhere in the Bay Area or around Northern California. With a big event like the annular solar eclipse coming up Sunday we thought we'd help you find a viewing event closer than you thought. This list includes a few select locations outside of the Bay Area, including Sacramento. And remember to view safely. Berkeley The Lawrence Hall of Science at the University of California, Berkeley (1 Centennial Drive) will have several solar telescopes for viewing the eclipse safely on their main plaza. BART to Open Early, Run Longer For Bay to Breakers

Train rides into San Francisco will begin around 5 a.m. Sunday.

BART has announced longer trains and an early open time for this weekend's Bay to Breakers event in San Francisco. Service for the 101st Bay to Breakers race in San Francisco on Sunday will begin at roughly 5 a.m. at all BART stations; trains running before 8 a.m. will run at 20-minute intervals. Bikes won't be allowed in trains until after 8 a.m. Download the special train schedule for Bay to Breakers service. The world-famous race attracts thousands of runners and spectators from throughout the Bay Area.
