Bunker Elementary was recognized as a California Distinguished School in 1998, 2002 and 2006. According to the school's website, Bunker Elementary was named after James L. Bunker, an educator who worked in Alameda County for nearly five decades. The school's mission is to help students become respectful citizens in the city of Newark and global community. The school is active in the Newark community as it served as a polling location on Election Day and as it hosted events like the Turkey Trot. The school's newsletter reports a Bunker Elementary alum organized his fellow Boy Scots to build benches for the school and help with weeding and sweeping on campus.
