Alameda County Fire Department Station 28 was once known as Newark Fire Station 1. The station opened in 2005 and covers around 13,500 square feet. Under the command of a battalion chief, three firefighters operate a Quint, a machine that has the features of a fire engine and a ladder truck. Firefighters say they have been called to assist with emergencies outside of Newark including the San Bruno pipeline explosion in September 2010.
