Blog: Rate Increase for Garbage Collection

Waste Management clearly doesn't care about Newark or the state of the economy. Their rate hike will just add pain to those already struggling in this economy. Bad timing.

In the mail today most Newark residents are getting a flier informing them their garbage collection rate goes up 24 percent with the next bill, due in June.

That's a rate increase of more than $5 a month... IF you use the smallest can. I have watched our housing market crash and not show any signs of recovery yet (even as cities around us are beginning to creep back up).

I have watched us go from having two schools with high levels of children living at or below the poverty line to almost all of our schools having this sad situation.

We are all living with less and waiting with breath held hoping our economy will start to pick up. Stores all over Newark have closed. Our mall has far too many vacancies. Many of our residents are struggling. Many have lost their homes.

So, let's raise the price of garbage pick up! That will help everyone?

Clearly Waste Management doesn't care about the economy or Newark. They must be thinking only of their profit. What a terrible time to raise the price of any service.

Did our City Council OK this???? We now pay a higher rate than folks living in San Ramon. Too bad we can't afford to have schools like the ones in San Ramon.

Bad timing, Waste Management. Thanks for helping to keep the economy struggling. That's a lot of $5 bills that won't be spent on groceries or clothing in Newark.

One story I tried to read had an ad covering 1/4 of it, and there was no way to make it go away.

Don't like it at all. "Change" isn't always for the better.
