Community Involvement, Unique Items Make 10th Annual Citywide Garage Sale

Newark had its largest citywide yard sale this past Saturday with nearly 200 participants.

In its 10th year, the city saw rendered the largest amount of participation for its annual Citywide Garage Sale Day on Saturday, and despite the heat, people were out and about as early as 6:45 a.m.

All the garage sale participants had their various reasons for taking part in this event.

For Holly Falck, she found this to be a good opportunity to get rid of a lot of clutter as she prepares her house for remodeling now that her youngest son has graduated high school and is heading off to college in the fall.

In the case of Sandy Riley, her yard sale served as a fundraiser for her daughter’s gymnastics school, Demaray’s Gymnastics Academy in Fremont.

And there were people who participated in citywide garage sales before and do it for the sake of community involvement such as Ernest Mendieta, Ruth Embry and Rhyscheuda Owens.

Items of all sorts were being sold at these garage sales, from unwanted toys, books, furniture to solar panels, golf clubs, water skis and even handmade jewelry.

Seven-year garage sale participants Elena Cortese and Leroy Sayas were selling plants, teddy bears and even music records.

Some of garage sales even had children, willingly selling homemade lemonade for customers, in the matter of keeping cool and hydrated on that hot Saturday. Giti Pieper’s children were amongst some of them as were the children of Aggie Boston, who set up her own garage sale in the last minute, just so her children can sell lemonade.
