Hoop It Up To Stay Fit In The Winter

Local cities and organizations offer youth basketball programs throughout the cold season.

If you’re looking for some great ways to keep your kids active during the fall and winter and keeping them dry, city basketball programs are a great option.

Basketball is an extreme cardiovascular activity that gets the heart rate up and, depending on the ability of play, can really keep you moving around the court.

Many children just don’t get enough exercise anymore, and instead of sitting at home on the computer during the rainy months, it is much better to have them do something active and make new friends in the process.

These programs are great in that they make sure that everyone gets playing time, and the youth teams get a reversible jersey. The lessons include fair play, teamwork, learning the game and sharpening their skills.

Here are some local basketball programs:

FREMONT

The City of Fremont offers a youth basketball league for boys and girls for from preschool through eighth grade. The league is sponsored by the American Swim Academy and runs December through February. Sign-up begins in July. If low enrollment occurs, some leagues may be combined.

Games are played on Saturdays at the Irvington Community Center, with some groups playing at other locations throughout Fremont. Due to a growing number of participants, games may be played on Sunday. Practices are held weekday evenings for only one-hour per team per week and are only for the third through eight grade groups! Practice times vary each week.

For Pre-K through second grades, it is more instructional and game scores are not kept. City staff simulate game situations and help the children understand the game of basketball the first 15 minutes of the allotted hour, with the remaining time spent in a game. City staff will coach all games.
