Staff Reductions, Budget Talks on Tonight's Board Agenda

The Board of Education is scheduled to meet at 7:30 tonight.

The Newark Unified Board of Education will vote on whether to reduce and eliminate more positions at its board meeting tonight.

The recommendation to reduce the hours of 14 different classified positions stems from the lack of work or funds within the district, according to the text of the resolution that is up for a vote.

The proposal comes a little more than a month to reduce services and workdays of its classified staff and to eliminate 23 full-time equivalent positions, affecting 27 certificated employees.

District staff is also expected to give the Board of Education an update on the release of Gov. Jerry Brown’s 2011-12 budget revision that was released in May.

Brown's revision, which was released May 16, projects that the state will take in $6.6 billion more in tax revenue for this year and next than originally expected.

About $1.6 billion of that would go toward K-12 education and community colleges.

After that state budget revision, Steven Shields, the district’s chief business official, had to determine what kind of impact it would have on Newark schools.

The meeting begins at 7:30 p.m. at the district office. To download the board’s agenda, click here.
