School District To Sell Ruschin Elementary School Buildings

Space occupied by Morning Star Church.

Newark Unified School District is selling a property that formerly contained Ruschin Elementary and is now occupied by Morning Star Church, according to staff reports prepared for Tuesday’s school board meeting.

The school district’s Surplus Property Advisory Committee determined that the buildings would not be needed for educational purposes.

The school district acquired the 10.14 acre property located at 36120 Ruschin Drive property in 1961 according to the Alameda County Tax Assessor records. The district is exempt from paying property taxes, which complicates the way the district is able to relieve itself of it.

In October 2013, the district issued a Request For Proposals from potential buyers.  No offers were submitted according to a memo from Elaine Nielson, chief business official for NUSD, to the NUSD Board of Education.

The NUSD Board of Education will consider hiring a real estate broker to sell the property. If that resolution is approved on Tuesday, the broker will be paid a commission of three percent of the property’s sale price.
