School District Makes Two New Hires

School board appoints assistant principal for Newark Memorial and a coordinator for state/federal/special projects.

Newark Unified School District has announced two new hires — including a new assistant principal for .

Ethan Cheever was named the newest of four assistant principals at the high school during the school board’s regular meeting on Tuesday night.

Cheever, who has taught at the secondary level for five years, comes from Mt. Eden High School in Hayward.

Cheever replaces Jonathan Ferrer, who resigned after he was in Pacifica.

The Board of Education also voted to appoint Hecate Rosewood as the coordinator of continuous improvement and state/federal/special projects.

Rosewood joins Newark Unified from the Alisal Union School District.

“It feels like a good place to work looking forward to not only what I can bring but what I can learn,” Rosewood said.

Also at Tuesday’s meeting, the board agreed on a 4-0 vote to authorize the district to hire up to three full-time equivalent positions at the secondary schools. (Board President Charlie Mensinger was not present at the meeting.)

The positions are to focus on interventions at the secondary level.

District officials also said at the meeting that preliminary numbers are showing that a slight increase in enrollment.

Director of Human Resources Tim Erwin said the district is seeing increases at the kindergarten and first, fifth and sixth grade levels as well as at the junior high and high schools.

But Erwin said the district needs to make sure that there isn't a dip in enrollment in other areas.

“[We’re] looking at daily enrollment counts and the impact they can have,” Erwin said.
