School Board to Vote on Draft of Lease Agreement for LOV Newark

League of Volunteers Newark owes the Newark Unified School District more than $60,000 in unpaid rent

The school board is scheduled to vote tonight on a draft lease agreement with a nonprofit organization that owes the Newark Unified School District more than $60,000, according to the April 16 school board agenda.

District documents state that the draft of the lease agreement is designed for the League of Volunteers Newark's facility use of the MacGregor Alternative Education Center and outlines a repayment plan on past due rent for its use of the former Ruschin Elementary School campus.

The Newark Unified Board of Education meets tonight at 7 p.m. at the district office, 5715 Musick Ave.

LOV Newark has an obligation to the district on past due payments at the Ruschin site in the amount of $66,350.93. Part of this agreement includes LOV Newark paying $10,000 towards the past due payments and arranging to obtain thismoney froman annuity at the time the agreement is signed. Additionally, the lease states they will pay $1,800 a month from their bingo revenues in a separate check at the time the rent is paid for the use of MacGregor, which will be on the first day of each and every month.

The past due rent surfaced in late March, as Newark Unified prepares to sell the former Ruschin school, where LOV has operated. The school, which sits on a 10-acre parcel, was closed in 1989.
