Newark Unified School District announced Monday that Superintendent Dr. Dave Marken was named ASCA Region 6 Superintendent of the Year.

District employees say Marken “led the charge” to renovate the physical and social environment of classrooms in the district.

He filled leadership positions, reinstated smaller classroom sizes, and worked with the school board to raise high school graduation requirements, said Liz Warren, executive assistant to the superintendent

“In short, morale, productivity, maintenance and operations, expectations, and test scores shot up (with Newark having the greatest API gain of all districts in Alameda County in 2013) with Dr. Marken at our helm: Nothing short of miraculous!” Warren said.

Dr. Marken will be publicly recognized during the ACSA Region 6 Summit at the Ruby Hill Winery in Pleasanton on June 19, 2014.

A lot of times people come into power and just sit on their hands waiting for the other handouts outside of their paychecks. Hands clean, do the minimum and go home. Mr. Marken is a man of action, a man of his word. He will go the extra yard for his students, his workers, his District, these traits are very hard to find today. Thank you NUSD School Board for finding such a man.
