NUSD Hosts Summer Food Service Program

The program will provide lunch programs in four locations this summer.

Food Services Department of the Newark Unified School District — Newark Unified School District is working to make sure that no children in Newark go hungry when school is closed this summer.

Over 2,500 children in Newark receive free or reduced-price meals during the school year, but many of these children do not get enough to eat when school is out.  The Newark Summer Food Service Program (SFSP) ensures that children from low-income families continue to grow and learn during the summer.

The Summer Food Service Program, sponsored by the U.S. Department of Agriculture, is the largest federal resource available for local programs that combine mealtime with recreational and educational activities.

Newark Unified School District Child Nutrition Services recognizes the need for the program in Newark.

“Many of our children who rely on school breakfast and lunch during the school year, do not have the opportunities for nutritious meals during the summer.  Kids who get enough to eat and have safe activities to participate in during the summer come back to school happy, healthy, and ready to learn.  Our summer meals program is a building block in service to our children and our community.”
