Executive director of LOV Shirley Sisk said sharing culture through art is important for school children.

Newark, Fremont and Union City are communities where culture mixes every day and these school programs can create additional moments to learn and moments of pride for students, she said.

“They learn how to be audiences, and they are exposed to things they probably never would see,” Sisk said.

Funds from Elegant Affaire bring a variety of performers to Tri-City schools, including jazz musicians, Chinese acrobats, storytellers and East Indian dancers.

“I look forward to it being a successful fundraiser, especially because it’s the 20th anniversary,” said Newark Vice Mayor Luis Freitas. He says he hopes this year's proceeds will top those from last year.

Freitas plans on serving chicken fricassee, a traditional Portuguese dish complimented by seasonal vegetables.

Alameda County Board of Education President Eileen McDonald plans to share an Italian sorbetto.

Fremont paralegal Anna Schipper finishes the dinner with a creamy lemon panna cotta.

To celebrate the event’s anniversary, Sisk booked vocalist Paula Iacomini, who performed at the first Elegant Affaire.

In addition to wine, there will be tequila tasting during cocktail hour.
