Enrollment in Newark’s Public Schools Decreasing

Projections show enrollment will continue to decrease.

Student enrollment is decreasing at Newark’s public schools, according to data released Thursday.

Enrollment has been on a steady decline since the 2004-05 academic school year, when the number of students enrolled in the district reached a high of 7,434, according to a report by Elaine Nielson, chief business official for Newark Unified School District.

This past school year, 6,294 students were enrolled in the district, according to Nielson’s data. Nielson projects that the amount of students enrolled in NUSD’s schools will continue to decline, reaching an all time low of 6,154 in the 2015-16 school year.

A parallel decline is seen in Newark’s home values, according to Zillow.com. On Sept. 1, 2005, the average value of a home in Newark was about $620,000, according to Zillow.  In Sept. 2013, the average home was valued at $434,300.
