Alameda County Opens Poetry Competition

Students in Newark are invited to participate.

The Alameda County Arts Commission announced on Wednesday the opening of a competition called “Poetry Out Loud.”

The annual program celebrates trends in poetry performances such as the slam poetry movement that has swept the country.  Organizers said that all students in high schools throughout Alameda County are eligible to enter the competition.  The young poet who wins at the county level can advance to state-level competitions and a national championship. The winner gets money for themselves and their schools. $50,000 in school stipends is at stake.

Interested parties should contact the Alameda County Arts Commission by January 31st to participate.  You can call 510-208-9646 or visit http://www.acgov.org/arts/html/whats_new.html.
