A (Non-Recyclable) Tree Grows at Milani Elementary

Crafty sixth graders at Milani Elementary School recently constructed a tree out of non-recyclable items.

Plastic bags, upholstery foam and even flip-flops adorned the tree alongside a wall near Debora Reinhart’s classroom, where students had learned about recycling and what happens to non-recyclable waste.

Judy Farrow, an office manager at Milani, was so impressed by the students’ work that she sent these photos (above) to Patch.

Farrow said she was asked by a student if she had any non-recyclable items for them to use for the project. As luck would have it, Farrow had a chair that was destroyed by her dogs and didn’t know what to do with the upholstery foam. It wound up becoming the tree’s trunk.

“I just found it fascinating,” Farrow said.

Though the tree was recently taken down, Farrow sent along these photos to share.

“I hope you see the beauty like I did,” Farrow said.
