Chris McKenzie, the executive director of the League of California Cities, defended the municipal salaries.

He said high-ranking public employees oversee large departments, manage millions of dollars in funds and have to respond to a complex array of state and federal laws.

He also noted the administrators would be paid much larger salaries if they were doing comparable jobs in the private sector.

"These individuals are the chief executive officers of extremely important local government agencies," said McKenzie. "Would you want a low-paid surgeon to perform your next surgery? You can always go out and find cheaper employees, but you get what you pay for."

Officials with the California Taxpayers Association were asked by Patch for comment, but they did not respond.

This puts city employees in the 1% doesn't it? Don't forget the benefits that private employers would not in their right minds provide. Boy, unions have sure done a great job.
Mona Taplin February 27, 2013 at 02:15 pm
When you look at police officer salaries in Newark, bear in mind that they pay for ALL of their benefits out of their pockets. How many of you pay for ALL of your family's medical insurance and related expenses out of your own pockets?
Mona Taplin February 27, 2013 at 02:33 pm
Unions did a huge amount of good when they started, but witout a doubt they are making far too many demands today. If everyone earned a fair salary for the job performed and had NO benefits, They would quickly realize they have to do some serious budgeting or go straight down the drain financially. The name of that system would be PERSONAL RESPONSIBILITY.

sorry mona, but i also know for a fact that when police reitre, they are getting 90% still, so i do not feel sorry for them for having to pay for there own benefits. When i am struggling to make my house payment and have not received a raise in 4 years, i do not want to hear how they have to pay out of pocket.
Nick February 27, 2013 at 03:41 pm
See this is where the hidden truth is, the City is still paying for pensions and other benefits, years and years while the officer is still alive. The central reason in all of these benefits to working for the government was the supposed salary was low in comparison to the private sector. The government got smart, we can delay payments way into the future in the form of retirement benefits, while keeping current salaries low. Now with salaries rising and the benefits package still in place, it's become a jackpot to get a government job. Now will the government cross unions? Not with the La Cosa Nostra putting X's on their backs.

You idiots are not looking at the big picture here. Those asswipes making those big bucks are not working in any dangerous conditions. There are not out in the elements getting sick, dirty and having to deal with idiot drivers. Those big dollar guys and gals work in the comfort of an office with a computer, phone and a bathroom close by. Give a break. Do they a lot YES.. Do they deserve it NO. The city should cut from the top first. Then and only then will I believe they earn it...
Joe Pereira February 27, 2013 at 04:32 pm
I apologize, your not idiots or just not seeing the bigger picture. Management has no union..... The workers have union.. The ones making all the dough are non classified non represented employees... So get your facts first
Guns February 27, 2013 at 05:15 pm
I know where you live cupcake. hahahaha. Just kidding (before anybody freaks out here, I know Joe, and he's a good guy, hahaha)
Nick February 27, 2013 at 07:29 pm
Ha, all companies cut from the bottom and the top still won't pick up those chores. Too many bosses and not enough paper pushers. HOw long has the City been closed every other Friday? It'd be a freaking miracle to get the City Manager to answer a permit question.
Max Entropy February 27, 2013 at 09:57 pm
Pay me $183000 and I'll gladly pay for my own benefits.

City Manager John Becker was paid $247,000 total compensation last year. That's more than we pay the governor of California. Your article was superficial and a complete white-wash. This is not investigative journalism, it's propoganda. Get a copy of the salary spreadsheets to see the total cost for taxpayers. Reports are that Becker has spent time training for marathons when he should have been working. We also have a 59% vacancy rate for R & D space in Newark--that's twice the regional average. R & D, not taco shops is what drives a sophisticated economy. We are paying top dollar for failure.
Police Chief James Leal was paid $241K. Part-time Personell Director Sandy Abe was paid $200K. Part-time Recreation Director David Zender was paid $180K. The list goes on and on. Comparing these prices to other cities is not an effective way to determine whether or not we are paying fair salaries. This is because the government sector has monopoly pricing power. Market prices only exist in the private sector. Analysis: goverment sector wages are now much higher than similar jobs in the private sector. Newark cops: Most of them are being paid $150,000 per year, some as high as $200K. A dangerous job? Police Officer is 10th on the list of most dangerous jobs in America in terms of workplace fatalities. First on the list? Cab driver. 4th on the list? The guy that drives the recycling truck and he only earns $35K average-- so no hazardous duty pay in America.

B, Newark Police Officers do not have pension benefits. They have to pay their own way, and the amount of pension they receive depends 100% on what they paid into it. My brother in law in N.Y. state got half his pay in pension benefits,- but his salary was very small. All benefits for public employees depend entirely on the city they work in.
Mona Taplin February 28, 2013 at 02:04 am
Me too,- and any sensible person would. But how many put future needs in front of today's wants?

I'd suggest working thru the Principal at NMHS with less speculation. I too was involved with PTA,Read More Newark Schools Fdn, Jaycees and other non-profits. Best practices are that the one handling, depositing money not also be the one keeping books. A great volunteer shouldnt be put under suspicion without there being group neglect. By-laws and an active Board can cleanup this miscommunication. The school Principal is the MOD.

I helped run the Snack Shack for 10 years presented a Binder to Coach with all Accounting of allRead More monies provided for deposit - Its real simple if any Booster member requests to see Books - Give them the Books for review - I do not understand why this has not been done - Even if seen in 2010 this is 2013 and things change and the Membership is entitled to regular Audits on the money they worked so hard to raise. So produce, show and review!!!!!

Good response Teddy, and truth.
Bong Sativa June 17, 2013 at 05:57 am
The more likely explanation is that the vast majority of Newark Police officers lack the requisiteRead More aptitude & agility necessary to fill shopping bags with groceries & didn't want to do anything to further embarrass themselves while under the scrutiny of the bewildered shoppers like James.
Teddy June 17, 2013 at 12:12 pm
Bong Sativa maybe you can meet Officer Indica.

Could it be that, because busloads of inner city non resident children jam the place, someone wiselyRead More decided to make the hours available to Newark taxpayers first?

This probably sounds heartless, but it sounds like this house should be condemned before a tragedyRead More occurs. I doubt if any organization can bring it up to code because of the cost. It's really sad to see this happening to a working person in this country.

I'm not sure if your mom will qualify but there are lines of credit out there that she can get as aRead More home owner. It will require her to have the income to pay back small portions at a time. Thanks James!, You know it's amazing when somebody puts their own personal time to learn andRead More understand something and then you share it... I would have been more then glad to explained myself in more detail face-to-face because I may learn something myself but like a marriage you don't get on here and start posting every little detail about you and your wife and I'm not going to get on here and start posting every little detail about my past employer`s. So to whoever flagged me you could have simply posted a disagreement and I'm open-minded and can admit when I make a mistake...I would've simply deleted my post if you could've proved it wrong.
