Week in Review: Nine Seek Planning Commission Seat, Newark Athletes Compete in State Competitions

Mayor Al Nagy has yet to choose who he will appoint to the city’s planning commission. City Clerk Sheila Harrington said this week that Nagy is currently reviewing the applications of that became vacant when city council members appointed Robert Marshall to council. Harrington said Nagy will make the appointment at a future council meeting.

Cougar athletes made headlines this week with the basketball team competing in the North Coast Section Division II Finals against Windsor High School. Newark Memorial High School senior also made headlines this week as he talked about his ambitions of winning a at the California Interscholastic Federation State Championships held Friday and Saturday.

A Piedmont man a U.S. Customs and Border Protection officer did not enter a plea this week as anticipated. Instead, a judge and granted a deputy attorney general’s request to ban Dennis Bagwell, 61, from practicing optometry. Bagwell, who taught at in Union City, faces charges of attempted murder and assault with a firearm.

Newark residents got some insight on the various types of growth that Newark could adopt in its General Plan. The varying growth models were presented at a community meeting focused on the Newark General Plan Enhancement Project.
