Newark Mayor Won't Seek Re-Election

David Smith announces his decision after serving as Newark's mayor for 16 consecutive terms.

Mayor Dave Smith announced Wednesday evening that he will not seek re-election this November.

Smith, who has been mayor since March 1978, is the most senior mayor currently serving in the state.

The 65-year-old mayor is finishing his 16th consecutive term. Smith said he was unable to talk with Newark Patch Wednesday about his decision as he was preparing for the 26th annual City of Newark Volunteer Recognition Ceremony.

At his most recent State of the City address, Smith said that Newark is heading for better times.

The longtime mayor has also been a leader outside of Newark.

Since 1994, Smith has been a trustee of the United States Conference of Mayors and is currently the executive director for the Ohlone Community College Foundation.

Patch will provide more details on Smith's decision and future plans after our Thursday interview with the mayor.
