Newark Hopeful New Grass Will Goose-Proof Park

Lakeshore Park renovation almost complete.

Contractors working on Lakshore Park in Newark, California said Tuesday that they will be restoring turf on the area in the next two weeks, which may or may not deter the geese from occupying the lake.

Gonsalo Jaime, Project Manager with Marina Landscape, said workers will start hydroseeding ASAP.

“You put the seeds into a big tank that mixes them up with water and wood fibers, then sprays it out,” Jaime explained.

Workers will plant a combination of fescue and perennial rye grass seeds to restore the turf they disturbed. The mix will be infused with Conwed 1000 mulch to facilitate quick growth, he said.

City Council approved the $228,000 contract to renovate Lakeshore Park in March of 2013, according to city staff records. Most of the work concluded earlier this month.

The remaining work consists of planting shrubbery and ivy, as well as repaving the trails around the lake, said Soren Fajeau, civil engineer for the City of Newark, California.

“We plan to do geese deterring landscaping…put in native grasses on the edge,” Fajeau told Patch. “But I don’t think there’s any way to get rid of the geese…It would make a big difference if folks stop feeding them,” he added.

The trail repaving project is scheduled to begin in Spring 2014.
