Known as the Newark General Plan Enhancement Project, the project's objective is to update the 20-year-old Newark General Plan, a policy document that acts as a guideline for county and city leaders when it comes to decision-making for future development.

According to the work session's agenda, the first phase of the project was headed by a team of graduate students and one professor from the California Polytechnic University, San Luis Obispo.

That team held numerous community workshops and prepared a Community Plan and Vision Document. In December, city council approved a contract with a consultant firm to create a General Plan Update and Environmental Impact Report.

The plan is now being created by staff and consultants, according to the agenda.

The purpose of the workshops are to "explain key policy directions in the General Plan and to explain the effects and implications of the policy changes that are proposed as the result of the community input and staff recommendations."

Two other work sessions are scheduled for May 9 and May 23.
