Council Approves Weed Abatement, Mayhews Landing Park Projects

Council members adjourned Thursday's meeting in honor of the late Ohlone College Trustee Bill McMillin.

Here are highlights from the March 24 City Council Meeting:

  • Council members awarded the basketball court renovation and handball wall removal project at to Silicon Valley Paving Inc. According to the agenda, Silicon Valley Paving offered the lowest bid at $53,709. City leaders received approval of a state grant to cover this project.
  • New contract with Coast Landscape Management for the 2011 Weed Abatement Program starts April 1 after council members approved the company’s bid. The contracted work will cover empty commercial and industrial properties that are not taken care of property owners as directed by Newark’s fire marshal.
  • Council members approved a change to Resolution No. 3515 that offers displacement rights for two new worker classifications: laborer and landscape inspector.

Council Member Alberto Huezo was not present for the meeting due to his chemotherapy treatment. His colleagues wished him well and a speedy recovery.

Mayor David Smith adjourned the meeting in honor of the late Ohlone College trustee and former Newark school board member William McMillin.

“I always felt he that was a consummate Newark guy,” Smith said. “Bill didn’t believe life should be a spectator sport. He got involved.”
