City Council Expected to OK Permanent Pot Club Ban

Also on Thursday's council agenda — a 13,000-gallon liquid nitrogen tank

Newark City Council members are expected to give final approval to a permanent citywide ban on medical marijuana dispensaries when they meet Thursday, Nov. 10, at 7:30 p.m. in the City Administration Building.

The council Oct. 27 prohibiting such dispensaries, which went into effect immediately. Thursday's action would make the ban permanent and would go into effect 30 days after adoption, superceding the urgency action.

Also Thursday, the council will consider allowing the installation of a 13,000-gallon liquid nitrogen tank at Matheson Tri-Gas, 6925 Central Ave. The tank, nearly 40 feet high, would be constructed behind the existing building at the site.

According to a staff report, liquid nitrogen is "inert, non-corrosive and non-flammable."

Matheson Tri-Gas already has a helium transfill operation on the property and supplies liquid helium to to major research facilities in Northern California, including the University of California and the Lawrence Livermore Laboratory. The liquid nitrogen would be supplied to many of the same customers, according to the report.
