Allied Waste, City of Newark Establish New Garbage and Recycling Contract

The new 10-year contract, which takes effect June 1, will include increased recycling participation.

Goodbye, Waste Management.

The City of Newark and Allied Waste/Republic Services have signed a new, 10-year contract for trash, recycling and organics pickup for residents and businesses in Newark.

Allied Waste/Republic, which prides itself on its customer service and dedication to the environment, has provided services in Alameda County for 20 years. The company employs 108 people at its Fremont facility.

Effective June 1, the new contract will include measures to increase recycling participation and reduce the city’s environmental impact. Allied/Republic Services will also launch a recycling education campaign, provide services at city-sponsored events and utilize compressed natural gas trucks on all of their collection routes.

“I'm confident that our decision to contract with Republic Services for Newark’s waste collection and recycling/composting needs is the right one for our residents and businesses,” Susie Woodstock, administrative services director for the city of Newark, said in a press release. “Not only is it a sound partnership, it will also provide customers with enhanced services that will increase the recycling rate in the city.”

Allied/Republic says the basic services currently offered to residents will not change. Residents will continue to receive collection services for trash, recycling and organics. Businesses and multi-family units will provide both cart and container services, except for food waste recycling.

Under the new contract Allied/Republic will also provide discounts for senior citizens ages 70 and older, two free passes per resident to the Newby Island Landfill and pre-purchased overage bags for organics. Additional services, such as motor oil recovery kits, three free on-call bulk collections and vacation holds, will also be available.

Of course, with the new service provider, the biggest change will be the new containers. The new containers will be distributed over the next few weeks and will follow the Alameda County Waste Management Authority’s new color standards: black or white for trash, blue for recycling, and green for organics.

Rates vary for level of service, with basic collection for single-family residents starting at $24.93 per month for 20-gallon trash, recycling and organics carts.
