The Bay Area Air Quality Management District issued a Spare The Air alert for Saturday, effectively banning wood burning for the day.
District spokesperson David Libby said the reason for the burn ban is that, "A high pressure system with dry, still conditions has settled in over the region and will cause air pollution to build up to unhealthy levels again on Saturday.”
During the day, it’s illegal to use fireplaces, outdoor fire pits, or any other wood-burning devices.
Jack Broadbent, executive officer of the district, acknowledged that this season has been particularly active for his company.
“This season’s thirtieth Winter Spare the Air Alert ties the record set in 2006,” Broadbent said. “Air pollution has been a serious problem during this dry, stagnant winter and it’s important that residents refrain from burning wood to protect public health in their neighborhoods, communities and throughout the region,” he added.
Violations of the burn ban come with a $100-$500 ticket.
