Two Strong Arm Robberies Hit Businesses

This week, police also investigate petty thefts and public drunkeness.

Burglaries and Robberies

Two men robbed the store on Cedar Boulevard with a handgun on May 19. The robbers are described as black males in their late 20s to early 30s. The man who had the handgun was described as 6 feet tall, 200 pounds and wearing a hooded sweatshirt and glasses. The other was described as wearing a rag on his head and was also wearing a hooded sweatshirt. No injuries were reported.

Newark police arrested a 35-year-old man on suspicion of attempted burglary and resisting arrest on May 16 after police were called to on Thornton Avenue about a strong-arm robbery. Officers found the man in front of bar on Magnolia Street and he ran, according to the police report. Police caught the suspect near the rear of the bar and he was taken to Santa Rita Jail.

Theft and Fraud

A 46-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of petty theft on May 22 at the JCPenney store at the .

A 43-year-old woman was arrested on suspicion of petty theft on May 22 at the  store at NewPark Mall.

A 30-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of petty theft on May 21 at the  store in NewPark Mall.

A 25-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of petty theft and falsely identifying himself on May 20. He was taken to the Fremont Police Department jail facility.

A 21-year-old woman was cited on suspicion of "dining and dashing" at the off of Mowry Avenue on May 18.

Drugs and Alcohol

A 21-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of a hit and run, driving under the influence and two DUI warrants on May 21 at the on Thornton Avenue. He was taken to the Fremont Police Department jail.

A 47-year-old man was arrested May 19 near the on suspicion of being drunk in public. On May 20, the same man was arrested on suspicion of assault and battery with a deadly weapon on Cedar Boulevard. He was booked into Santa Rita Jail for both incidents.

Two juveniles were cited in connection with possession of no more than 28.5 grams of marijuana on May 17.

Violence

Newark police responded to reports of a fight in progress on May 18 involving a group of males with baseball bats and pipes on the 36500 block of Cherry Street. Several police responded but no victims, suspects, weapons or evidence were found.

Other incidents

A developmentally disabled man was taken to Washington Hospital after police found him at the NewPark Mall food court threatening to jump over the second floor railing. Officers helped him to safety.
