Second Arrest in Newark Shooting Yields Firearms, Ammunition

Officers arrested a teen driver wanted in connection with a shooting on Cherry Street Saturday morning.

Newark and Union City SWAT teams arrested a teen driver Saturday who was wanted in connection with a Cherry Street shooting that sent a 14-year-old boy to the hospital with gunshot wounds, according to

Sgt. Mike Carroll said officers found the 17-year-old male suspect and a maroon Honda Accord that matched the suspect vehicle description at a home on the 35800 block of Burning Tree Drive around 2 a.m.

“During the search of the residence, multiple firearms and ammunition were recovered,” Carroll said in a news release. “The juvenile was booked at Juvenile Hall for attempted murder with a gang enhancement.”

Newark police worked with the South Alameda County Major Crimes Task Force to locate and arrest the shooting suspect on the 35800 block of Tozier Street Friday morning.

On Friday, neighbor Naomi Williams said she didn’t know about the arrest or heard about the police activity on her block.

“I’ve lived here for 10 years,” Williams said. “We’ve never had any problems like this. To hear about this (the arrest), is disturbing.”

She said she counts on her neighbors to pick up her mail and watch her home when she is away.

“Neighbors watch out for each other here,” Williams said.

The 17 year old shooting suspect and the 14 year old victim attended , says Carroll.

Neighbors say they found the boy suffering gunshot wounds to his leg  on the 36600 of Cherry Street Thursday afternoon.

This marks the fourth shooting in Newark for 2011.

Carroll says the boy continues to recover from his injuries.

Neighbor Donnie Holderfield said he was coming home from work Thursday afternoon when he saw Cherry Street blocked off for the shooting investigation.

“I’ve never seen anything like this,” Holderfield said. “This is a safe neighborhood. I walk these streets all the time. I walk down to the market. We have nice people who live here.”
