Parents picking up kindergarten students from Milani Elementary School had to wait a while Thursday, after Newark police ordered a precautionary lockdown in response to an incident that occurred off-campus but nearby.
Newark School Superintendent Dave Marken said police ordered the lockdown about 11:50 am and lifted it about 12:50 pm.
Kindergarten normally lets out at 12:10 pm.
So parents arriving for pickup duty had to wait 20 minutes or more until the lockout was lifted according to Marken, who waited with them.
He said the school's 360 students were otherwise unaffected by the episode.
He was not aware what police incident in the nearby community prompted the lockdown.
Calls to the Newark Police Department were not immediately returned.
Patch will update the story as details become available.
