Update: Home Burglary Leads to Car Chase, School Lockdown

One man has been arrested.

A man was arrested after a reported home burglary led to a brief car chase  and a school lockdown, police said.

The burglary was reported shortly before noon Monday on the 6200 block of Madeline Drive after a witness reported seeing several men trying to "force entry" into a home on that street then left the area in a vehicle, according to a Newark police statement.

Police said an officer attempted to stop the suspects' vehicle but the driver failed to stop and instead "lost control of the vehicle and struck another motorist" near Mayhews Landing Road and Spruce Street. Police said no injuries were reported, but the suspects fled from the vehicle.

The suspects, all described as males, ran west to a nearby flood control channel between Mayhews Landing Road and Peachtree Drive but after three hours, only on suspect was found, authorities said.

The man arrested was identified as East Palo Alto resident Carlos Morales-Villela, 19. He was arrested on suspicion of residential burglary, evading police, resisting arrest, prowling and hit and run.

Schilling Elementary School was placed on lockdown during the investigation as a precaution, police said. Superintendent of Schools Dave Marken was not immediately available to answer Patch's call.

This picture from my friend may explain a little of what is going on. Sounds like a high speed chase went through Mayhews Landing and ended at Spruce St. http://tinypic.com/r/245zhas/6

One of the suspects were caught and one is still at large...the one in grey/white shirt was caught and the one in all black is still loose. The high speed chase ended in a crash on spruce and mayhews and then both suspects got out of crashed car and ran... the car is still on mayhews n spruce..the k9 dogs ate up and down my street (peachtree ave)

The 19 year old thug committed 5 felonies in a matter of hours. NPD should slap an attempted murder charge on top for hitting the innocent driver. Nail him with a minimum 20-yr sentence. Now that they have one, maybe the punk will give up his accomplice. Thank God the kids were still in class at Lincoln. I am ALWAYS vigilant and aware of my surroundings. Our home was burglarized back in 2007 and since then I've installed cameras, an alarm and gotten a big dog. I've even had "bump key" proof locks added to all my exterior doors. It's sad that we've come to this, but you can't be complacent anymore. Razor-wire and a moat would have just been too inconvenient, LOL! If someone or something seems out of place, we will call. We will NOT tolerate these dirt bags coming into our town and violating us this way.

Good advice! We all should stay alert to protect ourselves and our neighbors. An alert neighbor paying attention to what was going on was responsible for the police being able to nab this thug, and hopefully they will have the other culprit(s) under arrest. One more good example of the value of an effective Neighborhood Watch program.

If only NPD had a Drone! A) Officers wouldn't even have to Initiate a Pursuit. Instead follow from the Unknown Eye in the Sky. B) Both Suspects would be in Custody instead of One due to the Drone covering triple the Ground Real Estate while armed with both Infrared & Night Vision. If Newark had such Security above, I know these Shitheads wouldn't even bother coming to our Community because the Risk of getting caught is far too great.Remember Burglary is a Crime of Opportunity, take the Opportunity away and the Target simply moves on. Domestic Drone Usage is going to Skyrocket over the next few years at all Levels of the Government as more Agencies and Jurisdictions find the Value in them. B)

I would love that....drones, over the new tank. Alameda County was going to get one, but there, as always, have been people with privacy issues.

Nick, The privacy concerns brought up by Occupy Oakland Members are void of any real concern. The CHP Helicopter that helps us out sometimes during ManHunts, already has a Infrared Camera on Board. ACAD's claim to fame is that "Drones are Bad, because they fall from the Sky and kill people". Yet they refuse to Reference any such Facts apart from Testing which does and will happen when attempting to find the right Mode of Operation. The real issue here with a Drone in Alameda County is all of the Protesters who occupy the Corner to the Toilet is they KNOW ALCO will supply the Drone during their Silly Marches in Oakland. The fact of the matter is that if you think about it there are already such Devices in the Field as Smart Phones can be construed as a type of "Drone" since it can be used for Surveillance among other things. Most of these people are just Anti Police and thus will Complain about anything in relations to Crime Fighting because they feel Cops aren't needed in our Society. What these idiots don't seem to understand is that Drones ARE HERE! People are Building Home Made Drones every single day for a variety of reasons. As a Drone Developer myself, I think it's only fair that our Law Enforcement Peeps get to play too!

I also live on peachtree in Newark, there must have been close to s dozen officers on this tiny street. I also saw the wrecked vehicle the suspects tried to flee in. Funny how these guys leave their crappy city and victimise people here and just Drive back over the bridge. The police should start gathering license plate info of westbound vehicles on the dumbarton for a period of time after a burglary is reported. Funny two more East Palo Alto residents were arrested in Hayward yesterday right near the other bridge. Hmmmm. Here's a link to that story. http://www.google.com/url?sa=t&source=web&cd=1&ved=0CC0QFjAA&url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.mercurynews.com%2Fnews%2Fci_22139232%2Fhayward-police-search-ends-two-residential-burglary-arrests&ei=1yLCUPOMLsytygGQhoCQDw&usg=AFQjCNFAUcf3J6O3DPS3ljDpB1R1T5OQ7w&sig2=KqHYa09iGj-x3t0KnuB60g
